When selecting white mother of pearl (M.O.P.), inlay artists look for different pieces. When engraving, the inlay artist is typically looking for a non flamed pattern or surface for ease of engraving. When you're engraving you're not using a saw, A blade or graver is more likely to catch the grain of the material and drift. This is not an issue for inlay due to the use of a saw so material choice ultimately comes down to aesthetic preference. Our shell's natural patterns range from flat/solid in color to iridescent and flaming in texture (similar to an opal-opalescent).
Our white mother-of-pearl blanks are flawless, without bug holes, crack lines or bark. Mother of pearl (also called nacre) is a white shell material whose grain features a stunning, 3D, iridescent quality that transforms with the angle of the light.
We hand select our shells to ensure the quality of our shell blanks. Our precision cutting process produces completely flat blanks at a consistent thickness, making them ideal for your inlay designs. Mother of pearl inlay material can be cut, with extreme care, using a fine jeweller's saw.
